How to chain studies in UXtweak

You know we’re constantly looking for new ways to make UX research as simple and efficient as possible. When working on a big project, there inevitably comes a time when you have multiple studies on your dashboard that you need respondents to complete, all using different research methods.

But how do you not frustrate respondents with all those tests? We have a solution for you!

With UXtweak, you can chain studies together and assign them to respondents as a sequence that’s quick and easy to complete. Create a smooth testing experience, without a need to click hundreds of times to move from one study to the next, opening new tabs and frustrating your testers! For example, you’re running a Tree Testing to evaluate your website’s menu structure

Sounds good? Let’s see how you can do that.

What is a study chain?

Simply put, chaining studies means automatically redirecting users to the next study after they complete the previous one. And all you need is a study link.

It’s a great way to save users’ time and keep them motivated throughout the whole process, without making them lose interest. Recruiting is done once, simply by directing people to the first study in the chain.

When should you think about chaining studies together?

Consider creating a study chain when you have more than one test for respondents to complete.

For example, you’re running a Tree Testing to evaluate your website’s menu structure. At the same time, you’re also preparing for a new feature launch and need users to choose which design they love most via Preference Test. In this case, since the studies are unrelated and seeing one first won’t affect the results of the other, it makes sense to chain them together and save both your and your tester’s time. This way, there’ll be no need to send multiple study links or recruit 2 different groups of respondents. You just get all the insights in a smooth and efficient way.

How to chain studies in UXtweak?

Here’s how you can easily chain multiple studies together in a few simple steps. Just like in the example we discussed above, we’re going to chain a Tree Testing and a Preference Test study.

1. Prepare all studies you want the respondents to complete

But don’t launch them yet!

In our case we prepared the drafts of 2 studies:

  • A tree test
  • A preference test

Choose the order that the respondents should see them in. In our case, the tree test will be the first study, the preference test will be the second.

2. Copy the link of the second study

Go to the second study’s Setup page.

  • In the Messages section, uncheck the Welcome message (there is no need to repeat it twice)
  • In the Recruit section, press Share study address and copy the link
  • Launch the study

3. Set up the redirect

  • Open the first study’s Setup page
  • Go to the Messages section
  • Paste the link into the redirect URL address field
  • Launch the study

That’s it!

Now try to complete the study yourself to make sure everything works well. Here’s what it should look like from the respondent’s point of view:

Study chaining tips

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Chain maximum of 3 types of studies

Anything more than that puts you at the risk of frustrating your respondents. A study that forces the respondent to switch mental activities many times is hard to focus on.

Start with the difficult one

A respondent’s mind is at its most fresh at the beginning of the study. Start the chain with the cognitively hardest study, then work towards the easier ones. Keep the number of cognitively difficult tests to one.

Offer a reward

Provide something to motivate the respondents – a discount code for example. Increase your reward based on the complexity of your chain. This will help to reduce the bounce rate of your tests.

Don’t take too long

For unpaid testers, keep the whole research session doable in 15 minutes or less.

Inform the testers

Include the redirection information in the instructions of your first study. Let people know what’s going to happen and how many activities there’ll be, so they know what to expect.

Let’s get into it!

Now that you know the correct way to chain your studies and provide a smooth experience to the respondents, it’s time to try it yourself. Create a free account and start testing with UXtweak today!
